Sam Smith “Writing’s On the Wall” Single Review

Artist: Sam Smith

Single: Writing’s On the Wall

Release Date: September 25, 2015

There has been much speculation regarding who will sing the tune to the newest Bond film, “Spectre,” with the British singer, Sam Smith, being the front runner. Although when asked one time, he did deny about being involved in the project and hinted that it could be his fellow British songstress, Ellie Goulding, who will be singing the theme song. As it turned out, all of that was a ruse.

His latest effort, “Writing’s on the Wall,” definitely has the ingredient of a classic Bond theme; a theatrical spine tingling orchestral work that sweeps in at the right moment to give the tune a much more dramatic atmosphere. The song also features a gorgeous melody which compliments Sam’s powerful yet feathery vocals albeit it’s leaning more towards being a Shakespearean love ballad than a Bond track. Sam also flexes his falsetto vocals which at first sounded a bit off but it did grow on me.

It’s a beautiful soundtrack however it’s biggest flaw is that it builds up but never reaches its climax. When the horns finally bellowed, one would think the song has finally reached its pinnacle but unfortunately that wasn’t the case. There were so many moments towards the end where the song could and should have finally blew up but it’s like when you’re towards the edge of reaching a what could be a satisfying orgasm only for it to wilt after an image of your prune textured grandparents flashes right in your mind. So it’s somewhat unsatisfying to just let the song just trickle down. Well no matter what, I’m sure nothing could be worse than Madonna’s travesty of a tune; D+ for the effort of doing something different though even if it fails at every angle. As for this song, it’s a beautiful romantic Bond theme that unfortunately leaves a lot to be desired.
