Dustin Lance Black brings to life the history of the LGBTQ civil rights movement in ABC’s upcoming docudrama miniseries set to debut February 2017. Based partially on the memoir by Cleve Jones, When We Rise tells the history of the gay rights movement, starting with the Stonewall Riots in 1969, and chronicling the personal and political struggles, set-backs and triumphs of a diverse family of LGBT men and women who helped pioneer one of the last legs of the U.S. Civil Rights movement from its turbulent infancy in the 20th century to the once unfathomable successes of today.” Gus Van Sant, who previous worked with Dustin on Milk, will direct the first two hours of the seven-part series, with Dustin Lance Black and another director taking the following five episodes. When We Rise stars Mary Louise Parker, Guy Pearce, Whoopi Goldberg, and Rosie O’Donnell.
