Men’s grooming products and the market for them is on the rise, and has been for awhile. Already huge in Asia, and now Europe and America are taking notice. You used to have to special order or strategically hunt for a male-specific product. But, now you can walk into any supermarket or big-box store and you’ll likely find a section of products, created, designed and packaged to appeal to you, the most masculine of men. The global male grooming market was valued at US$47.2 billion in 2015 and is projected to reach US$60.7 billion by 2020, according to Euromonitor. With that in mind, the contributors of Woofd huddled up to put together a men’s grooming guide rounding up some our favorite products, to help you sort out the all-stars from the benchwarmers. We’ve got you covered with shaving cream, bear balm, hair product, moisturizers, body wash, cologne and more.
Pacific Shaving Company Caffeinated Shaving Cream
I LOVE this shaving cream – it smells fantastic, goes on smoothly (not thick like some creams or with the chemical smells of the more basic creams). Its fresh scent perks you up in the morning, making shaving something to look forward to! For best results, get your face wet with warm water, squirt a small amount in your hand and rub into a lather on your face and voila.
Dr Bronner’s Pure Castile Soap
Looking to travel extra light yet stay fresh on your trip? Dr Bronner’s Pure Castile Soap in a great all-in-one option that happens to be all natural. I like to travel with a 100ml bottle of Dr Bronner’s Pure Castile Soap and utilize it as a face wash, body wash, and shave cream. Just a few drops will create a lather and 100 mL will last me for 2-3 weeks. For the best value, buy the 32 oz bottle and pour into your own airport security approved bottle of 3oz or 100 mL or less. Plus, it comes in a variety of awesome scents like Peppermint, Tea Tree Oil, Citrus and Lavender.
No 7 Restore and Renew Night Cream
Traveling can be stressful and leave your face feeling a bit oily and tired at the end of the day. Poor skin care can leave you with zapped skin if you don’ love your face back. Even when I’m on the road for an extended period, I make sure to keep up my skin care routine just like I’m at home. In addition to wearing a moisturizer with SPF during the day, I wear a night cream: No 7 Restore and Renew. Carried at stores like Target, No 7 Restore and Revive is a high quality anti-aging and wrinkle reduction cream at a reasonable price.
L’Oreal Men Expert Hydra Energetic Quenching Gel
I travel for work constantly with crazy days, stress, and grime from various cities…my skin can feel like it’s out of control. L’Oreal Men Expert Hydra Energetic Quenching Gel is a gel based moisturizer that gives you an icy burst feeling on application, instantly making my skin feel fresher and more awake. It penetrates fast and quenches for 24 hours while leaving no residue or uncomfortable weight. When you’re up in the air as much as I am, the dryness of the aircraft can start to age you pretty fast. Although not my skin because I’m Latino and black don’t crack! However, I still make sure to never forget my Hydra Gel because keeps my face feeling young!
MUJI Moisturizing Milk
Use it every day at night. It’s ultra light to use in the sweltering heat of Southeast Asia or the dry and bitter European winters. Absorbs in seconds. A simple low-stimulating hypoallergenic moisturizer for delicate and easily irritated skin. Uses natural hydrating ingredients that is gentle and effective for sensitive skin. And it’s superbly well designed and embodies the MUJI brand I love so much.
Clarisonic Facial Cleansing Brush
If you’re into keeping your skin right and tight then the Clarisonic Facial Cleansing Brush is for you. You can grab the brush alone or one of their kits that offers many varieties of brush heads for different types of skin and purposes. There’s ones from deep pore cleansing to acne cleansing and many others. Although this product is a little pricey its well worth it in the long run.
Scents
Although nothing turns me on like the testosterone-filled scent of a real man, let’s be honest, nobody wants to end up sitting next to a smelly guy during a long flight or train ride. When it comes to toiletries or grooming essentials for traveling, one of my essential picks has to be a good fragrance, cologne, perfume or “eau de toilette,” depending on which part of the world you are in. The predicament is when traveling you can’t always carry that much and because it is so hard for me to pick only one – although Bleu de Chanel is probably the closest to my heart. When shopping, especially at airports, ask for those little samples they often have in the perfume sections. They are tiny little spray bottles no larger than 5ml, easy to carry in your toiletry pocket to carry on the place with you, or inside your handbag. Don’t forget, smell to impress. But don’t put too much either… that’s a total turn off, even for a scent junkie like me.
Honest Amish Beard Balm
This beard balm is made by hand from scratch from an original Honest Amish recipe. It is infused with virgin argan, avocado, grapeseed, virgin pumpkin seed, apricot kernal oils as well as nut butters (yup.. that’s right). This balm comes in a sturdy and durable 2 ounce tin .It smells masculines without being too perfumey or overwhelming. It softens, conditions, and repairs dry splitting hairs, as well as nourishes new growth. When your beard is trying to take over your face.. reach for this!
American Crew Fiber
My go-to hair product. I’ve tried several over the years, but I always come back to Fiber by American Crew. It provides a strong, pliable hold with a matte finish so it doesn’t leave your hair looking too greasy or shiny. My hair is naturally thick and likes to form a deflated afro looking monstrosity by itself, but Fiber keeps it under control. To use Fiber effectively, rub a small amount evenly between palms before working into your hair after it is completely dry.
Dusk Deodorant by Herban Cowboy
Dusk Deodorant by Herban Cowboy is one the sexiest smelling scents I have ever encountered. It has a masculine, and very earthy/natural aroma. It is non-greasy, goes on clear and dries quickly. Herban Cowboy doesn’t use Phthalates, Aluminum, or Parabens in their products. With that being said, as with most natural deodorants, multiple applications throughout the day are necessary, as they don’t offer the 24 hour protection of their toxic competition. If you are a fan of the scent, it is also available as a cologne and body wash.
